Fort Clinch (October 26, 2010 - Tuesday)

Yesterday, we moved to our site that our reservations were for... a front row spot with the view of the boats coming in and out! We were like little kids when we realized that we got our spot!

We brought our new bikes with us on this trip and being on a military installation, it didn't take long before we were informed that we needed to wear helmets, off to the BX we went and bought helmets. We look like goofs, but we won't get into any trouble this way!

Our goal today was to go to Fort Clinch on Amelia Island. We were given directions to get to the ferry that took us across the Mayport air field which was interesting because there are helicopers that are landing and taking off all of the time. On this new route we were also able to get close up pics of the Mayport Lighthouse. About a 1/2 mile outside of the gate is the ferry to cross the St. Johns River to Amelia Island to go to Fort Clinch. The Mayport Ferry cost $5.00 and it's a 10 minute ride across the St. Johns river.

From Wikipedia: Fort Clinch is a 19th century brick fortress begun in 1847 after the end of the Second Seminole War. It was named in honor of General Duncan Lamont Clinch, inportant figure in the First and Second Seminole Wars. The only battle to occur at Clinch was when the Union troops recaptured the fort in 1862 after Confederate forces seized control the previous year. Fort Clinch served as the base of Union operations in the area throughout the Civil war. In 1935, the State of Florida bought 265 acres that included the then-abandoned fort and the surrounding area. Fort Clinch State Park including the fort, opened to the public in 1938.

Pelican Roost, NS Mayport (October 24, 2010 - Sunday)

I thought we left 5am behind when we retired but we were up at 5am, packed and on the road at 7:45am... arrived at NS Mayport at 3:30pm. But there was a method to our madness... we wanted to see how far and how long we could actually travel. Also, we wanted to see how well Cosmo and Patrick would do! We drove 7.5 hours... I drove about 5 hours and Cass drove the rest. Cosmo and Patrick did great! And for the first time, I napped while she was driving!

Since we arrived here a day earlier than originally planned, we are back in the 3rd row... far from the ocean/river view that we have been fortunate to have our previous stays here.
